Finder Shows Partition as NTFS, "Can’t Install, Not NTFS"

I ran Boot Camp Installer up to the “Install Windows” step. I created a partition called “BOOTCAMP” using the Boot Camp Assistant Utility on a second internal HDD in a 2012 Mac Mini. I then hit the F command (Format), and then Install.

Installation failed because “the target partition is not NTFS”. Apple Finder and Disk Utility both recognize the format as NTFS.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Merge lost bootcamp partition with MacOS partition

I tried to install Windows 10 using Boot Camp utility. I don’t know why, but Apple built a tool that creates a GPT partition style, which cannot be used by Windows, even if you format if as NTFS. After 1 day lost trying to figure out how to install windows in this EXPENSIVE machine, I gave up.

Now I have another problem. Trying to merge the boot camp partition using Apple’s Disk Utility, I simply cannot do it. The tool says I need to “enable journaling”, but even if I do this, it still says I need to “enable journaling”.

my sudo diskutil list is:

Partition missing on Late 2015 5k iMac

$

Hey Guys,

I’m hoping someone can help me with this because I’m at my wit’s end. A few weeks ago I purchased a brand new 5k iMac running El Capitan 10.11.1. 4 Ghz processor, 3 TB Fusion Drive, 4 GB M395X, 8 GB Ram (that I upped to 24 GB myself). I was installing an official Windows 10 iso (downloaded from Microsoft) using Bootcamp when the assistant froze up and failed. When I attempted to locate the partition I only saw my original Macintosh HD but the 700 GB I included in the Windows partition was missing. When I tried to run Bootcamp again I got the following error message:

Your disk could not be partitioned

An error occurred while partitioning the disk

In disk utility I can run First Aid on both the Fusion Drive and the Macintosh HD but it finds no issues. I can’t erase the Macintosh HD volume, even if I start up in recovery mode. If I try to restore to a Time Machine back up I’m told the disc can’t be deleted. I took the iMac into an Apple Store last week and the Geniuses couldn’t figure it out. They assured me it was a fluke occurrence and ordered a brand new iMac for me, free of charge. It came in today and when I attempted to install Windows 10 again, the exact same problem occurred. Can anyone help? I don’t want to go through the process of replacing my computer again if I don’t have to and Apple themselves seem to have no idea what’s going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I seem to have hit the same problems as others in upgrading OS. I can no longer access my bootcamp partition (which I previously resized to give more space to Windows). Hopefully Loner or someone else on this community can help me. All my work is on the Windows partition and although I have tried using office for mac it is not letting me save my files for some reason. Please let me know what other information to post to help.

Bootcamp will not allow partition

I recently updated to El Capitan, and have the updated Bootcamp version 6.  I have the ISO of Win 10 on the flash, and got all the way to the point I can choose how much space I want to give Windows.  I chose about 100 GB and hit partition drive, but it gives me the pop up that it could not partition the hard-drive.  I have booted into the Command R, but it does not appear to be much different than the First Aid that is in the Disk Utility.  I have run the Disk Utility first Aid, rebooted the computer, but wasn’t sure if this was a common problem. I hadn’t seen anything recent in the forums on this, so I thought I would ask.

Bootcamp cannot create partition

Hello,

I am trying to get Windows 10 (64-bit) installed with Bootcamp Assistent on my Macbook Pro.

I got an official version of Windows 10 (64-bit).

I start Bootcamp, make the Windows partition 50gb and select the correct ISO-file for Windows.

I then start the process, but after about 30 seconds Bootcamp tells me: “The hard drive cannot be partitioned. An error occurred during partitioning the hard drive”.

I can then click “OK” and I can restart the process, but it continuously gives the same error.

There is no further information.

About my Macbook:

– OS X El Capitan version 10.11.1

– MacBookPro12,1 (Retina 13-inch, early 2015)

– Hard drive structure “OS X Extended (journaled, coded)

What I’ve tried so far:

– using the disk utility to check and repair my hard drive

– rebooting the Macbook

– rebooting Macbook in single user mode and give it the “/sbin/fsck -fy” command (without the quotes)

– tried changing my hard drive structure to “OS X Extended (journaled)” instead of “OS X Extended (journaled, coded)

As you see I already tried Google and forums (also this forum) on this matter, but all of this hasn’t helped a thing. No post or what so ever lead me to a solution.

Who can help me getting this problem solved?

Does Time Machine also back up a bootcamp partition?

Hi,

My iMac has had a fatal meltdown.  Basically it died of old age.  I think the hard drive is still intact though.  Anyhow, I’ve been religiously using Time Machine to back up my stuff.  Will Time Machine also back up a Bootcamp Partition?  I was never sure and right now I don’t have a quick way to look at my backup.

How To Make Windows BOOTCAMP partition bigger?

Hi All,

I am having a bit of trouble trying to make my BOOTCAMP partition bigger.

I have the partition set to 115GB, then I realized that I need more– upto 150GB at least.

I know that windows is formatted as NTFS. So, can I create a new partition @ 35GB, then format it as NTFS, then merge it with windows?

Thanks For Your Help!!

Matt

boot camp partition disappeared after adding a third partition

Hi all,

sorry to bother you another time with this problem:

I had two partitions on my macbook pro:

one for OSx 10.11.1

one for BOOTCAMP Win 10.

I added another partition (ExFAT) to put shared data there but as i found out now, this leads to difficulties:

After I restarted and tried to reboot, BOOTCAMP partition was gone. I removed the newly created ExFAT partition but this didn’t change the situation.

Could you please help me to solve this?

I read in several other threads that you need the output of the following comands:

diskutil list

diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Here you go:

boot camp partition disappeared after adding a third partition

Thank you very much,

Loner T please help me. After resizing the OS X partition in El Capitan, Bootcamp partition becomes unbootable:(

I was trying to increase the size of my bootcamp partition but got my bootcamp partition unbootable:(

on start up screen, I can only see the recovery and OS X partition.

I can see the bootcamp partition in disk utility in OS X and the info tab shows “Bootable   No”

How can I get my bootcamp bootable again?

P.S. I had lost my bootcamp partition when I was upgrading from mavericks to Yosemite because I was resizing the os x partition to allocate more space to bootcamp partition while using mavericks. Loner T helped me get my bootcamp partition back. After using Yosemite for a while, I feel I need more space for bootcamp partition but Yosemite disk utility does not allow me to resize the OS X partition so I give it up. Until today, I upgraded to El Capitan. I played with disk utility again and it resized my OS X partition without any problem. Then I plan to reboot to bootcamp system and add the released partition to the bootcamp win partition using mini-partition software. However, the startup page can’t find my bootcamp partition. It only shows recovery and OS X.

Boot Camp refuses to create a Windows partition – Says it needs the entire disk

Hey guys,

This is my first time using Boot Camp and it has been a hair-pulling nightmare. Boot Camp will not allow me to create a Windows partition on the same drive that I have OS X installed. I created a special partition called “Boot Camp Partition”, and the only option I have available is “Restore disk to a single OS X partition”. Why would I want to do that? How would that help me install Windows? Why is this so hard? I have the following partition table on my hard drive:

Disk0s1: OS X 10.11                Journaled, Extended

Disk0s2: Boot Camp Partition  Journaled, Extended

I have tried formatting Disk0s2 to every format under the sun. I have tried removing the partition and created free space where it used to be. Nothing on the planet Earth is letting Boot Camp create a GPT Windows partition. Surely there’s some other way of installing Windows that doesn’t involve nuking my entire disk, right? Is there some magical special trick to this that I’m not following? I’ve followed all of the steps in Apple’s guide for bootcamp and I have had no results. Suggestions?

Best Boot Camp Partition Size

Helo All,

I hope this message finds you well.

I need to add a partition to install windows 8 besides my Mac OS on my SSD HD of size 250 GB.

My device details a

Model Name: MacBook Pro

  Model Identifier: MacBookPro12,1

  Processor Name: Intel Core i5

  Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz

  Number of Processors: 1

  Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

  L3 Cache: 3 MB

  Memory: 8 GB

  Boot ROM Version: MBP121.0167.B14

  SMC Version (system): 2.28f7

Currently I have upgraded to El Capitan

I have Office 2016

I tried to use a virtual machine (VM of Oracle) and used a size of 60 GB size but I removed it again as I did not like it.

Now the size status is:

  Available: 93.52 GB (93,523,103,744 bytes)

  Capacity: 249.78 GB (249,779,191,808 bytes)

======================================================

I think it was 90 GB used and around 160 GB is free before installing the VM.

I need to verify that the 60GB of the VM is returned back?

Also to know what is the best Boot Camp partition size to use for installing Win 8 on it.

=======================================================

Any help and support will be highly appreciated.

Best,

Ehab

Trouble creating partition for Bootcamp

$

Hi all,

I’m trying to install Windows 10 Bootcamp on my new Late 2015 iMac 27″ 5K with a 512GB Flashdrive. I’m using the ISO on my HD rather than a USB stick as it’s the latest model.

I can run the assistant, download the windows software, create a partition in Bootcamp Assistant and restart in Windows but when running the installer I reach the point where it asks to choose the partition, I select the BOOTCAMP drive, click on Format and then the BOOTCAMP label disappears which leaving just the drive and Partition number.

I assume this means the drive is now NTFS format but when I then hit next to try and install I get a Windows error saying: ‘We couldn’t create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files.’

I’ve tried with different partition sizes in the Bootcamp Assistant but it always fails with the same error.

Help !?

OSX11 & BCA for Win10: cannot select valid partition

$

Hi: Used to run a Win7 partition on my mid-2012 MBP. Installed a new SSD last night and started the process to install Win10. Used BCA to create the USB drive, and used a Win10 ISO (education edition, FWIW). Continued with BCA to create the partition for Win10.

Restarted and booted from the USB. Win10 setup goes through all the loadings. Get to the screen to select the partition for install, and am told that Win10 cannot install there because the file system must be NTFS. Went for gold and erased the BCA partition, re-writing to the same disk space through this Win10 screen. Good to go right? Wrong.

Get a different error that said something to the extent of “needing to enable a boot controller / setting in BIOS” (going on pure memory here). No clue how to resolve that. Restarted, then booted back into OSX and tried the process again. Same results.

I’ve spent a good amount of time searching the boards, but can’t seem to find a thread that specifically deals with this issue. I found one describing the need to load SSD drivers, but that went way above my head (here).

I would be happy to go to Win8.1, but the only access I have to that OS is through an upgrade and not a clean install. Would prefer to install Win10 than go down that rabbit hole, even if the answer is “hang tight for updates from Apple”. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
