Missing BootCamp partition after installing OS X El Capitan

$

I used to have a 40GB Windows 10 BootCamp partition. I wanted to reduce the size of the partition but having installed El Capitan, I found the the BootCamp volume is ‘missing’ ie greyed out in Disk Utility and no longer visible as a startup disk.

I saw threads on similar issues (e.g. @Loner T: Boot camp missing after El Capitan – My output) and hoped I might be able to get some assistance in restoring it.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

User @Loner T asked for the following Terminal outputs to help to specify my particular issue:

I get the can’t find system folder icon at computer startup after running Windows 10 repair utility attempting to fix a non-starting windows 10 bootcamp partition

I blew it – my Windows 10 bootcamp partition wasnt starting up and I ran the windows repair utility – at next start up, mac OSX El Cap woouldnt load and hung at the anti-symbol, indicating it couldnt find the Mac OSX system folder/file – obviously the Win10 repair utility messed something up. Im in disk utility now and my system partition shows up as generic “disk0s2″ under my main internal hd – there is an OS X Base System listed under disk 1 in the bottom section.  Is there any way to repair this without reinstalling OSX system? I havent been current with Time Machine and would loose a lot of data if I had to go back to old backup – thank you very much for any advice.

No option to erase or partition Samsung 850 SSD for MacBook Pro

I trawled the internet to find a solution as to why my MacBook was freezing and after days of attempts I came to the conclusion that the HD needed replacing. Now I’ve replaced the HD with this new highly recommended SSD from Samsung, I can’t erase the drive and I have no option in Disk Utility to partition it either. I try to erase and the machine tells me the process has failed. I’ve tried booting off a USB and I get the same result. It’s driving me nuts. I need help. Thanks in advance.

Can’t change partition from 1.39 GB on MacBook

Replaced a HD in my daughter’s Macbook and OS X only creates a Mac OS X Base System drive and locks me out of changing the partition to use the entire drive. I have tried various drives ranging from 750 – 160 GB and it does it every time. I thought I could just stick a new drive in and reinstall a Time Machine backup. But can’t get a drive larger than 1.39 GB.

Disk0 shows a Apple Disk Image and Apple Partition Map. Thinking it should be GUID and Logical Partition but that’s not an option when setting up the drive. Terminal shows 12 partitions on the drive (maybe that’s normal). I prepared the drive via a newer Macbook using Yosemite. The Macbook with the problem 2012 era that started out either as Lion or Snow Leopard.  Can’t recall if I updated this Macbook to Yosemite.  I have my Lion and Snow Leopard disks but never able to setup the drive via the disk since I’m never offered a drive to select via Mac OS install.

Have tried to fix this via Time Machine backup, Terminal and via Target Disk mode. Even asked my nephew whose an Apple Genius and he’s not sure what the problem is or how to fix it. Can’t find this type of problem online either.  I’m thinking the problem may be due to trying to prepare the new drive via a Yosemite Macbook instead of a Lion based Macbook.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Partition and erase external hard disk failed–"operation failed"

I’ll just describe the problem that I had with my hard disk and how it occurred.

First I’ll show you the details of the hard disk:

Partition and erase external hard disk failed-- "operation failed"

Partition and erase external hard disk failed-- "operation failed"

– I got this hard disk( Sony 1TB 2.5″ External Hard Drive) nearly a year ago. And only used it on two of my macpros to back up the datas and files.

– Recently I tried to let someone copy a video for me from his PC, but he said that his PC couldn’t read my hard disk. Then I came to realise that the disk wasn’t setup for both system(mac and windows).

– The person didn’t know what was the problem also so he let some else to fix my hard disk on windows and obviously it didn’t work.

– I asked it back today and try to erase it to MS-DOS (FAT) on my (early 2015) mac pro(OS X El Capitan 10.11.1), but it says erase process has failed.

Partition and erase external hard disk failed-- "operation failed"

Partition and erase external hard disk failed-- "operation failed"

– Then I searched online and followed one of the video which says go to the partition and format it to MS-DOS FAT, then go to erase and do the same thing as described above. However, it didn’t work as well and shows “operation failed”

Partition and erase external hard disk failed-- "operation failed"

Partition and erase external hard disk failed-- "operation failed"

I’m wondering Is this problem caused by the operation on the PC? I don’t know what exactly the guy has done because I wasn’t there. Or maybe the hard disk is damaged that I have to restore it. Anyone here could help me?

Windows Boot entry gone after resizing osx partition??

$

So I have a early 2011 i mac book pro here and I have windows 7 installed with bootcamp. I only gave windows originally 70gb of space and decided to give it a little bit more space.  So I simply used disk utility to shrink the osx partition to create some free space on the hdd. I was thinking I would just use windows to then extent the windows partition with the free space. After rebooting the windows boot entry was gone I can only boot osx. The partition is still there since I can still browse the ntfs partition in osx and view the windows installing and user files. How do I fix this issue.  It seems like every mac I use is very touchy and have a hard time doing simple things like resizing partitions. I am very skilled with computers, PCB manufacturing and hardware desighn, But this is my first mac and its filesystem and bios system is allot different then anything I have ever used. So Its very foreign to me. I would never buy a mac, but I got this mac for free so I might as well use it.

Used MBP, no start up disk "partition map failed"

I recently bought a used mid-2012 Macbook Pro from my partners employer for a step up from my 2009 in processor and memory.

First power up displayed the “?” Folder flashing. I logged in with Command+R to try and re-install Lion, but there is no start up disk available. I’ve followed online directions for the below options, but am having no luck having the Lion installer recognize it.

Disc Utility shows the main/parent hard drive.

– I ran Verify/Repair and got the “Partition Map failed b/c no slices were found”

– I tried to create a partition, and the “unmounting disk” progress bar just kept scrolling with no finish line so I deleted it again

– I created a bootable USB but it did not register (plus, with the “disk2/Mac OS X Base System” showing up in Disk Utility that should do it anyway)

Ideas on how I can successfully create a new start up disk in disk utility?

Do I need to fix this disk partition after Bootcamp installation?

Do I need to fix this disk partition after Bootcamp installation?

I can’t do anything to the partitions on my 6TB disk after a bootcamp windows 7 installation.  Is there a way to get the two Macintosh HD partitions merged together again?

Bootcamp stalled after the partitioning portion and I had to restart and finish the install from the DVD (was trying to do it off a USB flash drive per the instructions but this iMac doesn’t support USB flash drive boot).

I seem to have access to the full capacity of the drive from what finder shows, but a look at the partitions doesn’t look right.

Fix it?  Leave it?

Help! Partition unmounts at random in el capitan

$

Ok, this is a difficult one: Long story short, My partition keeps unmounting.  This all started when my system froze when an iphone call was redirected to my mac while I was playing Civilization 5. I powered down, but when I booted up I was welcomed to the flashing grey folder with a “?” Mark.  Went through the standard troubleshooting steps, assumed it was the hard disk so I had it replaced with a Transcendence SSD.  Installed the SSD, installed os x, upgraded to El Capitan.  Was able to access my information on the old disk with an external mount via usb. Moved the data over (videos, pictures, etc) and all seemed to be well.  I even made a time capsule backup on a 3rd ext. HD.  Then, while running an app, (Civ 5 :/ ), the system crashed again.  2nd time around was more difficult but managed to get back to El Capitan via Time Capsule Restore. It lasted the day.  This time, after closing the macbook, I opened it up sometime later and was greeted to a reboot and our old friend the “?” mark folder. Any ideas on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.  Troubleshooting steps attempted are listed below: Mac details: Macbook Pro mid 2012 13″, 4gb ram, 512gb Transcend SSD Troubleshooting steps:  After 1st crash with old apple 512gb 3.5″ IHDD: Booted into internet recovery mode Ran disk utility: unable to verify or repair disk nor volume (option greyed out) Switched to terminal and ran disk utility:  same results at this point, since my data was not backed up, I bought an SSD and switched HDD (see story above) After 2nd crash: Ran disk utility:  unable to verify or repair disk volume(option greyed out) Attempted to erase disk: process froze. Attempted delete and remake partition (several times):  process froz at “waiting for disk to reappear). Ran same steps through terminal: same results as above Partition was set to:  Disk0 – FDisk_partition_scheme, disk0s1 – 0xEE Began researching os x terminal commands and searching for similar situations. Installed mountain lion on a slow 16gb usb to run TestDisk:  no results Played with Fdisk and fsck commands:  no results Learned about GUID Partition Table Attempted to change partition from 1 to 2 partitions with GUID and back via disk utility, and fdisk:  no results. Called Apple support and explained the situation.  They think it is the logic board.  I am skeptical because I can access the The old HDD and the SSD  through usb ports with no issues.  They suggest to bring it in.  I live in Japan and due to location, that option is difficult Out of desperation, i resize to 16 partitions…. Success!!!!!!  Repartition complete (no idea why) Reinstalled Mountain Lion: success Upgrade to El Capitan: success Restore data from Time machine backup:  success System seems to be operating normally.  Download some tv shows, organize photos, browse web.  System is running fast.  Shutdown mac and power up a couple of times:  no issues Running system for a couple of hours, then close the lid (assuming it enters sleep mode):  return to the grey “?”mark folder :( My apologies for the novel.  I will be forever grateful for anyone who can point me to a solution other than sending it in to Apple support.

cannot install windows 10 partition table discrepancy

I had windows 7 running in a bootcamp partition for over a year , no problem with MACOS Yosemite. With Microsoft offer I decided to upgrade to windows 10.

Upgrade went fine  ,I  then upgraded the bootcamp drivers OK. Windows10 running fine.

Then I upgraded to El Capitan,  still no problem. Then, windows 10 started to give me some problem (start menu critical error) which I did not manage to fix , I decided to revert to rollback to windows7 . When the windows 7 started to boot : I got an error ApppleHFS missing or corrupt.

I figured out that it must be because I upgraded to el capitan in the meantime: so replaced  AppleHFS.sys and Applemnt.sys by the windows7 versions and could  boot windows7 OK. I thought I would then try a clean install of Windows10 : started bootcamp assistant, deleted windows  7 : bootcamp assistant shows only one partition which I thought was OK, then I repartitioned the MAC HD using the partition slider and chose a smaller size for the MAC OS  (200GB) and a lager Bootcamp partition: 702GB

When I try to install Windows10, the partition table displayed by the windows installer is the old one! I did not try to go any further

I read some of the other posts and tried to give information which should be useful

It looks like a  MBR problem but I do not understand it. Thanks for any help

Messed Up Bootcamp Partition

Hello

Thanks to anyone who reads this or can provide any help.

System

iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)

iMac 10, 1

El Capitan 10.11.1

Windows 10 via bootcamp.  Started as Windows 7 HP and upgraded via Windows 8 pro and 8.1 pro.

Background

About 2 weeks ago I started having problems with my computer and could not get OSX to boot. I don’t know what I did but only Windows would start. I was also able to get into the recovery partition. I was able to see the os x partition from within windows. It just would not boot. The Apple icon came up on screen and th progress bar got about 3/4’s of the way across the screen then the iMac shutdown.

I tried a number of solutions from different websites but could not get beyond this.

I decided what I was going to do was back up my computer and reinstall. I new I had a Time Machine back up of OS X to within a few days but I didn’t want to lose my windows partition so I bought a external hard disk and got a cheap copy of Acronis True Image included as a special offer. I installed this on the Windows partition I backed up a complete image of Windows and OS X partitions. I used the software to create a Acronis bootable recovery usb.

I Then used Disk Utility from my original Snow Leopard install disk’s to wipe the disk back to a Single HFS+ Partition. I Installed Snow Leopard and then all updates to get my computer back to El Capitan. So far so good and all working. I then used the migration assistant with my Time Machine back up and got all my Apps files and settings back. So at this point OS X was going fine.

To get windows back I then used Disk Utility to partition half my 1 TB as FAT32 with the intent of using the recovery USB to recover the Windows partition. However I found the USB would not boot. I discovered later that disabling system integrity from the Recovery Partition then seems to let the USB key boot but I only found this out by accident later when I had left the key in and I rebooted after disabling the above.

So being stuck without a way to recover my backed up partition I had the bright idea! to use Disk Utility to partition a separate 100GB from my mac partition to another FAT32 partition. I then installed my original Windows 7 to this 100GB partition. I then reinstalled my Acronis True Image software to this and then used this to recover the Windows image to the 500GB partition that I originally created.

The recovery process seemed to go well and once completed I was able to view the partition in os x but I could not boot in to it. After a little further research I discovered the 4 partition limit on GPT and realised I now had managed to created 5. The EFI, OS X, OS X recovery, 100GB Windows 7 and the 500GB recovered Partition.

So my next idea was that now that I had my original windows recovered and I could view the files I thought I could Use Disk Utility Again to Delete the 100GB partition and resize the OS X partition back up to 500GB Also. I have done this and I followed the guide here http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/installing.html#sluggish to fix Windows boot problems as I thought that may help.

This didn’t work but I also read about Hybrid partition tables and how if these got problems that Windows may not boot. I then came across this forum and noticed that there may be a solution to recover/fix the partition tables.

Screen Prints

I have taken some screen prints of the commands and outputs that I have seen recommended in this forum. I would hope with these someone can point me in the correct direction.

I Searched using the EFI GPT option in test disk.Messed Up Bootcamp Partition

I Added Screen prints below of what you get from selecting p:list files with each of the non mac partitions listed above.

Thanks for looking and I hope someone can post me in the correct direction. If you need any other screen prints please let me know.

How can I make use of TC partitions and ensure the parse bundle file is on the correct partition?  I can’t see the partitions I made in Finder, but I can drag/drop files into the single ‘Data’ folder under Finder/Shared/TC.

MacBook Air, OSX 10.10.3, 128GB; 2TB Time Capsule ME177LL/A.

End Goal:  Use Time Capsule as Time Machine for my MacBook Air and as a storage solution for large files that I don’t want permanently on my MacBook Air.

So far, I’ve set up the TC and set up Time Machine on the TC.  I was able to create 2 partitions on the TC using Disk Utility while TM was performing a backup and the disk was recognizable under the Disk Utility.

Under Finder/Shared, I see the ‘Airport TimeCapsule’, and when I click it there is one file called ‘Data’.  I expected to see my two partitions here.  Under ‘Data’ is a ‘Zissou31’s MacBook Air (3)’ Sparse Bundle file, and I can also create folders here and drag/drop files onto the TC here.  I can see the partitions in Disk Utility, but how can I see/use the partitions I created in Finder?

I’m concerned this may not be set up correctly and I’m either losing out on an entire partition that I created or these dragged/dropped files may be at risk of being overwritten by TimeMachine.  How do I ensure the parse bundle file is on the appropriate partition?

I turned off TimeMachine and turned it back on to see if I could ‘point’ it to one of the partitions, but the ‘Data’ folder is the only think TimeMachine sees.  How can I point Time Machine to one of the partitions?

Thanks!

bootcamp setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing sytem partiition.

How to fix guid partition table?

I was trying to install Bootcamp on El Capitan. When it got to “Partitioning disk…” my Mac kernel panicked, rebooted, and now I have a “Basic Data” partition which can’t be removed because Disk Utility says “Counldn’t read partition map…” and if I try to run first aid it says that there are problems in the partition map that may prevent my computer from booting. I’m too scared to reboot because of that error. What can I do? This is what diskutil list says:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

Can somebody help? I’m doing a backup right now to prevent data loss.
